Bioscience General was introduced in the year 1999. The advance course of Zoology (honours) was started from the session 2006-2007. The founder of the department was Late Dr. Atreyee Basak. Department was initially started with one fulltime teacher, one contractual whole time teacher, ten students and one support staff. With gradual progress the student intake strength of the department at present is sixty and above per year.

All the faculties of the department of zoology are well qualified and acquainted with the recent research advancement in their respective fields. The faculty of the department of zoology includes two substantive, and two state aided college teachers. The department also has one fulltime laboratory attendants as non-academic staff.

Every year majority of the Honours students end up with very good result in the University Examinations, securing consisting highest marks in the college as well as numerous first class marks. More than sixty present of the students of this department generally go for higher studies after completing the honours course. Many of our alumni have already got settled in various lucrative and prestigious fields like research and academics, banking, school and corporate sector.

Our mission is to train the young minds to enrich their knowledge so that they flourish themselves not only in their respective working area but also to become an honest person in every aspects of life.

The department runs both Honours and General undergraduate program in Zoology (CBCS and 1+1+1 system) affiliated to University of Calcutta.

All members of the faculty are well acquainted with the upcoming fields of research in biology.

Dr. Nilanjana Bhattacharjee has acquired her doctoral degree from Jadavpore University, and worked in Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata. Protein Chemistry, and Molecular Biology remained her field research during doctoral level and she also perused post-doctoral research in the field of bio-informatics and molecular modelling. .Her research interests also include cell biology, biochemistry, genomics and proteomics.

 Prof. Subhankar Dey is pursuing his Ph.D degree from Zoological Survey of India, Kolkata (HQ). His research field is molecular taxonomy and ecology of plant parasitic helminthes. He has research interest in DNA barcoding, Scanning Electron Microscopy and phylogenetic study of some specific group of micro-fauna.

Laboratory: Department is well equipped with all proper laboratory instruments, computers and smart class-room to facilitate students properly as per curriculum of the undergraduate course.

Seminar Library: Department has an independent seminar library to facilitate students with more books and reading materials and meet up their needs.

  Student Activities:  

Apart from the regular classes held according to the curriculum students are involved in various academic and social activities in the three years program

Academic activities:

. Excursion/Educational tour : Both Hons. and general students are taken to a number of educational tours and trained to different aspects of field works in the field of Zoology which finally culminates in submission of relevant project reports under mentorship of different faculties during the time of their practical examination

. Student seminar: All Hons. Students have to present seminar in some relevant topics in their curriculum

.Exhibition: Students participate in science exhibition in science fest held in college, as well as outside the college and in different state level competitions.

Seminar/ Workshop: Students get ample opportunities to participate in various seminars and take hands-on training from eminent persons in different workshops organized by the department. They are also taken to different seminars and workshops held outside the college as well as in the university.

Science talk/ Quiz: Students are encouraged to participate in various science talks, quiz contests organized by our college and other institutions.

Other Activities:

NCC and NSS: Many of our students become member of NSS and/or NCC unit of our college and get opportunities to participate in different social outreach program and social activities organized by the respective units

Reunion program: our students organize reunion program with the alumni of the department

Co-Curricular Activities: Willing students get opportunities to explore their talent in acting, dancing, singing etc. in various cultural program held in the college
