The Department of History came into existence with the establishment of the college in 1963.Only general course was taught at that time.The Honours course was started during 1965.Many eminent teachers were associated with this department. At present there are five teachers in this department. Many students who have passed out are doing remarkably well in the post graduate level. A few have completed their thesis. Some of the students are also doing brilliantly in other fields as well.
The Department offers Honours and General courses to the students.At present CBCS and the previous (1+1+1) system for both Honours and General are taught. The department conducts regular class tests so that the students can improve in the university examinations.
Dr. Srabani Datta and Dr,.Nibabari Banerjee have been awarded PhD. And Professor Sudip Mandal is doing his PhD.
Dr Srabani Datta,Prof.Utpal Sarkar and Prof.Ranjana Mondal of the Department of History are working on a project entitled 'Voices of the Past on the streets of South Kolkata' funded by the research cell of New Alipore College.
Students are guided by the teachers who give attention to all of them.They can access the college library as well as the Departmental library.The Department arranges extension lectures for the students.Eminent historians and professors like Dr.Durga Basu,Sri Satyakam Sen and Dr.Mahuya Chakravarty have delivered lectures to the students of both Honours and General stream .
The student of the Department carry on various activities throughout the year. The students celebrate the Teachers Day every year by presenting a wonderful cultural program Ex-students of the Department keep contact with the Department. The Alumni Meet was organized in September,2019 Seminars are organized every year to enable the students to become familiar with modern research trends. The Department was able to organise an international talk by two renowned historians Dr.Ranavir Chakravarti and Dr.Sekhar Bandyopadhyaya. Dr.Rita Chaudhuri , Dr.Ratna Basu, Dr.Satyakam Sen delivered lectures to the students.
