College at a Glance

Established in the year 1963, the college is affiliated to the University of Calcutta and is NAAC Re-accredited with "A" (2023). Dr Arun Kumar Bose was the founder principal of this college.  Curving for a green oasis in South Kolkata, New Alipore College believes in inclusivity of all and strives to make quality education accessible to all irrespective of their caste, creed, religion, gender  and economic status.

The college is  headed by a dynamic academician Principal Dr Jaydeep Sarangi. The vision of the college – INCLUDE, IGNITE & INNOVATE. These three pillars form the structure that holds the college together. New Alipore College is committed for the well-being of its immediate locality. Bhasha Sangam and Cultural Competence Building cells organize events towards cultural plurality of India. Translation Centre of the college  is an active body that motivates the translators from one language to another. We believe that translation constitutes the heart of India. Many teachers are engaged with translation projects at different levels.

The college has a number of notable alumnus who have left a mark in their specific fields. Many are notable scientists, many have become professors and teachers, and many are journalists. The college has an incubation cell to sensitize the students for self employment.    The college has a registered  alumni body, which organizes events. Many ex-students of our  college are leaders of the state like   Hon’ble Minister Shri Aroop Biswas, Mayor-in Council Member, Shri Debashish Kumar, Mayor of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation Smt Krishna Chakraborty were students of the college. Eminent drama personality, Shri Manoj Mitra has been an ex-faculty member of the college.    

The college hosts a series of events to give a better value addition to the students and to enrich the staff. Here resource persons from all across India and abroad travel to engage with the students. Noted authors, academics, media persons, scientists, philosophers have visited the campus to enhance the skills of the students and staff. The college campus is free from posters and plastic. The college is the seat of higher studies in the region. The college has been visited by a range of people from historians to poets, and journalists to educationists, like John Thieme (UK), Sekhar Bandyopadhyay (NZ), Ranabir Chakravorty (JNU), Alessandro Vescovi, Università degli Studi di Milano - State University of Milan (Italy), Subodh Sarkar, Binayak Bandyopadhya, Prof.Sanjukta Dasgupta, Rajkumar Kothari, Anjum Katyal, Sharmila Ray, Snehasis Sur, Gopali Banerjee, Gopal Chandra Mishra, Prof. Malashri Lal, Prof. Bashabi Fraser  noted poet Keki N Daruwalla, Nalini Bera, Ashok Sengupta, Dr Siddhartha Biswas and Dalit activist and authors- Manohar Mouli Biswas,Jatin Bala and Kalyani Thakur Charal.

The college has a green campus with a sprawling garden that beautifies the spirit of the institution and those who belong there. The garden has a huge display of seasonal flowers and more. Oranges bloom in our backyard. The vertical garden spread across the walls of the buildings have been a highlight, with leading daily newspaper Ei Samay writing an article on the campus. The campus has a number of fruit trees and has recently been successful in cultivating edible mushrooms.  The college has a 60 kilo volt capacity of solar power generation in the campus itself. With this, the college is striving towards a more sustainable and cleaner form of energy. The college also harvests rain water to counter the problems of shrinking underground water level in the city.

Students of the college have become successful in academics,extracurricular activities and leadership. Apart from winning the prestigious University of Calcutta Shield in Football, the students excel in every activity they participate in. The students have scored brilliantly in their academic pursuits over the years with students securing First Class and even achieving University Positions in academic results of the curriculum. Students of the college have excelled in further higher education too, with many of them joining academics themselves. Some of our professors have been students of the college themselves. Some faculty members are engaged with continuous research and scholarship. Many are acting as resource persons for national/international seminars, conferences, panels and workshops. A large number of teachers are associated with teaching in PG departments of repute. Principal Jaydeep Sarangi has been acting as state level mentor for NAAC as assigned by the Govt. of West Bengal.

We have a poster free campus and a student’s council that is there to support the students in every activity of college. The Students’ Council organize many social outreach programs like Blood donation camps, Basanta Utsav, etc  themselves and host a series of cultural events including the Annual Social.

The college believes in building an inclusive community around it. For this the different departments of the college take up social outreach programs as a part of their curriculum. The students engage in large numbers to be a part of this and help build a better society. The Department of Journalism, Political Science, Education, English, being pioneers in creating and continuing Social Outreach campaigns for the entire year. We organize programmes on human values and ethics regularly.

New Alipore College runs an NCC wing attached to 1 Bengal BN N.C.C (COY1/3A) lead by NCC Officer Lt Gobindalal Mandal (Assistant Professor of Mathematics). The cadets regularly engage in multiple activities and are a part of Youth Exchange Programs. The college also has a NSS unit under the University of Calcutta and Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt of India. The program is lead by Program Officer Dr Mohsina Iqbal (Assistant Professor of Botany). About 100 volunteers are enrolled every year in this unit. The NSS unit does a commendable job with multiple events serving the society.

The college has a digitized library with online public access catalogue. The library provides access to subscribed and open access resources through the digital library service. The college library is enriched with a large number of books, journals, magazines, text and reference materials. A number of programs have been developed by the college library to engage with the community and promote inclusivity. The library provides reading facility to neighboring schools and colleges.

We believe in working together. The college has engaged in MoUs with other academic institutions and organizations to facilitate exchange of resources. A number of activities are organized every year with MoU partners. Students and teacher exchange programs help create a synergy with other organizations. Every student is assigned a mentored to track the development of each candidate.

Yoga classes are organized by World Yoga Society. Physiotherapy classes are organized by a Govt employed therapist. Soul awakening sessions by Swami Vedaswarupananda from Institute of Culture , Golpark help the students counter the stress of everyday life. Keeping in mind the wellness of the mind, the college has a counselor. The students are regularly mentored for their academic and psychological growth. All issues and problems are addressed.

New Alipore College is not just focused on Academic Excellence but harps on the need to create better citizens who can live and contribute to global society.
